Thomson Reuters spoke with the firm\u2019s CEO about his innovative approach to law firm partnership and how it is rehumanising legal practice.<\/h4>\n<h2>Breaking the traditional law firm mould<\/h2>\n<p>Keypoint Law\u2019s proposition empowers a collective of senior lawyers who operate without the bedrock law firm principles that are so commonplace. &nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s about self-determination,\u201d says Warren. &nbsp;\u201cWe combine the power of the law firm with the freedom of the individual. This is unprecedented for law firms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The firm\u2019s model was developed over 20 years ago by Keystone in the UK which is now a publicly listed company and a Top 50 Law Firm. Their most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keystonelaw-ir.co.uk\/annual-reports\/2022\/037\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">annual report<\/a> showed a year-on-year growth in sales of 27%, to almost $125 million.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2626\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2626\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2626 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com\/sea\/business\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/24\/2023\/03\/WarrenK-300x281.png\" alt=\"Warren Kalinko\" width=\"300\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com\/sea\/business\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/24\/2023\/03\/WarrenK-300x281.png 300w, https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com\/sea\/business\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/24\/2023\/03\/WarrenK-768x720.png 768w, https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com\/sea\/business\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/24\/2023\/03\/WarrenK-740x694.png 740w, https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com\/sea\/business\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/files\/sites\/24\/2023\/03\/WarrenK.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2626\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Keypoint Law CEO Warren Kalinko<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not an easy model to develop,\u201d admits Warren. \u201cIt takes years to dismantle the myths of a deleveraged firm and demonstrate performance, and we are now at the point where it\u2019s showing great signs of opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How do you rehumanise the practice of law?<\/h2>\n<p>The premise of rehumanising legal practice is about disrupting the law firm partnership by bringing to the table the best of what law firms have to offer in terms of legal specialists, teamwork, collegiality and support services, whilst overcoming the parts of law firms that people don\u2019t like, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Removing all billable hour targets<\/strong>. Operating a professional law firm without the constant pressure of financial micromanagement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Decision making around pricing<\/strong>. &nbsp;Empowering partner-level lawyers to make the decisions that impact directly on their financial performance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Freedom and flexibility<\/strong>. Keypoint\u2019s lawyers decide how they work, when they work and which clients they work with.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We know that the COVID-19 pandemic changed the world in many ways, including the flexible working models that have since found permanency in the legal sector. Keypoint launched with a remote \u2018no face time\u2019 model back in 2014, which Warren says, \u201chas given them a head start on decentralised work.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How do clients benefit from this approach?<\/h2>\n<p>Thomson Reuters research revealed that 44% of corporate legal buyers value the <a href=\"https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/legal\/resources\/resource\/2022-australia-state-of-the-legal-market-report\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">quality of advice and specialist knowledge<\/a> the most from their lawyers. Keypoint comprises over 60 lawyers with an average of 18 years\u2019 experience across 25 areas of law, bringing a high level of specialist insight into their service offering.<\/p>\n<p>With Keypoint Law\u2019s flat structure of 90% senior-level practitioners, clients are being looked after by the person with the knowledge and experience, invariably leading to longer term and deeper client relationships. \u201cWe find clients really enjoy our model of service delivery,\u201d says Warren. \u201cThey can pick up the phone and speak directly to the partner\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2>Technology-driven solutions<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/insight.thomsonreuters.com.au\/legal\/posts\/leveraging-process-improvement-taking-the-steps-needed-to-improve-operations-within-your-law-firm\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Legal technology<\/a> has progressed so radically that it\u2019s hard to imagine a time, not that long ago when technology was almost exclusive to large law firms, who had budgets and IT departments to build their own practice management systems. With the influx of technology now available on a subscription or licence fee basis, small firms can access the same tech power as the large firms.<\/p>\n<p>Keypoint offers a stack of technology solutions to support the legal talent, leveraging the UK practice management system to operate in Australia. The move to cloud was significant for the business, enabling them to access everything securely and work from anywhere.
