Legal research has always demanded rigour: the right authority, the ability to cross check it against new developments and creating an argument that can withstand challenge in court. However, what has changed is the pressure around it.

Matters are becoming increasingly complex, timelines are ever tighter, competition is fiercer and technologies promising to offer a solution are showing up in the market faster than anyone has time to properly evaluate them. A second matter carried the same lesson. Two lawyers were ordered to personally bear costs of S$5,000 each after the court found that closing submissions in a civil suit relied on two cases that did not exist.\u00b2 One had been constructed by pairing a real case name with an unrelated citation, the other was fabricated entirely and neither lawyer had independently verified the research before it reached the court.

These cases point to a pattern of use by some lawyers rather than a one-off lapse. AI tools built on public and\/or unverified data can produce research that reads convincingly while resting on nothing. The risk is not that AI accelerates legal work, its speed without verification and that transfers risk onto the lawyer who stands behind the result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The regulator has already weighed in<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Singapore\u2019s Ministry of Law has stepped in, publishing a dedicated Guide for Using Generative AI in the Legal Sector<\/a> in March this year. Developed in consultation with law practices, in-house counsel, and technology providers, the guidance was shaped with particular attention to how smaller practices actually operate, not just how large firms with dedicated technology teams do.
